gentrification

a bro is someone who assumes that nay space they enter is meant to cater to augmenting their personal experience. they "don't give a fuck," even at the expense of everyone around them. regardless of the presence of oppressive and problematic behavior, a bro will tirelessly try to appear aloof. a bro cares about doing interesting things only when enough people are watching. interesting things, to a bro, are shocking, ironic, edgy, but vapid activities that are manipulated according to the environment. a bro is too cowardly to express anything sincere.

Bell reflects on her experience as an artist surviving in a capitalist society. She paints a vision of Toronto in the ’90s and what’s happened to the thriving indie art scene in subsequent years. The neighbourhood she grew up in has been gradually swallowed by gentrification. Small family-run shops have taken turns being over- taken by national corporations, and marginalized groups have been forced to vacate the communities they once formed amidst scarcity.

Originally published in Volume 1 of Mortar, a theoretical journal available online at linchpin.ca, this zine features two pieces centred around building class consciousness in urban environments. Large emphasis on gentrification processes and Marxist/anarchist perspectives.
