Zine Workshops

Zine Workshops

The Anchor Archive runs zine-making workshops at the library and in the community. We frequently receive requests for zine-making workshops and will agree to do it if someone is available to facilitate and the fee offered is sufficient to cover our expenses.

If you receive a request for a zine-making workshop, first collect all of the information:

    • Who is it for, who will be attending?
    • Will it have a particular theme or focus?
    • When and for how long? It should be at least 2 hours.
    • Where will it be held? We can host workshops at the zine library and sometimes this is better because then all the supplies and the photocopier are on hand, but you need to book the space on the calendar.
    • What is their budget?

After you collect all of the information, you can consult with the collective and see if anyone wants to facilitate the workshop, then confirm with the person who requested it and put them in touch with the facilitator.

    Workshop fees

    Workshop fees should cover:

    • Facilitator's time ($20-30 per hour), which will include the time teaching the workshop and 2-4 hours of preparation
    • Workshop supplies
    • Administration

Typically fees collected for a zine workshop are split 70% to the facilitator and 30% to the zine library, but this can be adjusted to make sure supplies and expenses are paid for and the facilitator is paid fairly for their time.

    Workshop supplies

To run a zine workshop you usually need 5-10 of each of the following:

    • Fine-tipped black ink pens
    • Pencils
    • Erasers
    • Scissors
    • Gluesticks

    You will also need:

    • White paper
    • Old books or magazines to cut up for collage
      • The Anchor Archive has a collection of these in the screen printing area
      • If you're at the zine library or otherwise near a photocopier, you can ask people to make copies of pictures and then cut them up, to preserve the originals
    • White out

Some other things that are nice to have:

    • Typewriter
      • The Anchor Archive has a couple of these, but check that they are working and have ink
    • Coloured markers, crayons, pencil crayons, etc.
      • These don't show up in black-and-white photocopying, but they make sense if someone is only making one copy of a zine or they're going to make colour copies
    • Stamps
    • Stencils
